How Stefan Mazzarino is at the forefront of technical innovation.

My path with Steuler

The Steuler Group opens up new perspectives for individual development and nothing proves this better than the real stories of the people at our sites.

One of them is that of Stefan Mazzarino, who asserted himself as a young employee with ambition and perseverance, now heads a department and drives the company forward with his ideas.

We had the pleasure of talking to him about his development with us:

Stefan Mazzarino | Head of Research Development and Process Engineering Plastic Linings

Dear Stefan Mazzarino, before we start: We are delighted that you are sharing your story!

Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to talk about my time and experiences at Steuler - this opportunity shows me once again that my opinion is valued here.

How did your career with us begin?

I started as an apprentice process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology - back then at Keramchemie, before Steuler took over. It was an exciting time, as I learned a lot right from the start and quickly took on responsibility.

What was one of the moments when you felt you had really arrived?

It was definitely when I moved to Application Technology in 2012. This move gave me a lot of insight into our products and the needs of our customers. It was the first time that I was able to look beyond production and really work with all my colleagues in the plastics technology team. This gave me the feeling of really becoming part of the whole company. I am now on first-name terms with everyone and have been able to solve a project or everyday problem with everyone.

How have you already progressed in your development?

In 2009, I embarked on the path to becoming a state-certified technician for plastics technology while working. Even before I successfully completed this, I was able to demonstrate my potential at Steuler in the application technology of plastics technology and finally bid farewell to my predecessor after two instructive years together in well-deserved retirement. That was 10 years ago and a lot has happened since then.

In innovation management around interesting technology topics, I have already been able to accompany some ideas into implementation and place my impulses at the very top.

I have headed the department since 2024 and we have renamed it “Research Development and Process Engineering”, as this better reflects what we do together in this area. At this point, I would like to emphasize the “we”, because Anton Himmerich has been with me for four years and is actively supported and challenged in his progress. He joined us as an apprentice, just like me, and has also continued his training to become a state-certified technician. I am proud to support him in his development - just as my predecessor helped me.

That's a great attitude. What do you think makes the Steuler community special?

Above all, the family atmosphere and the togetherness. Here at Steuler, many people have known each other for years and some have even been with Steuler for generations. My colleague Mr. Himmrich is already in the third generation. I have also noticed that the junior staff development program promotes team spirit enormously. People support each other, which is a great help, especially in challenging times.

Since you are talking about challenges - which ones have you overcome and what makes you particularly proud of your personal journey?

Over the last ten years, there have been a number of complaints that were extremely challenging and demanded a lot from us. These experiences were instructive. My biggest challenge was and remains developing and implementing technical visions. I want to continue to raise the technical level in our area and use demographic change as an opportunity.

I am particularly proud of my stamina and, yes, my perseverance. It wasn't always easy to assert myself as a young employee and take over from my predecessor in the right way. I have mastered this with these qualities.

What do you particularly appreciate about your workplace?

I like the saying: “My home is my castle.” We have the freedom to design our workplace in a way that is right for us. That's something I really appreciate. At the same time, we clear out old structures together and design our working environment in the way that best supports us.

And we find it inspiring how you are helping to shape Steuler. One last question: What about your path did you not expect when you started with us?

The diversity of the plastics industry and the many people I have met in my professional life. To date, I have collected over 100 business cards - from business partners, supporters and suppliers. I also never thought that I would become so deeply involved in scientific projects. I find it very fulfilling to challenge myself scientifically every day.

We are very pleased to hear this and thank you for the interview and your openness. Thank you for being part of Steuler!

This personal story is one of many special people who have made Steuler what it is today.
